A Short Insight into Homeschooling

According to homeschooljamaica.com, homeschooling is the practice of parents choosing to facilitate the education of their child at home, thereby opting not to enrol them in the traditional or government public school system. Homeschooling has been adopted by some parents/guardians as it has been proven to have a number of benefits, such as catering to the needs of their child and being more cost-effective. Despite this, many individuals and researchers believe that homeschooling may lead to social issues within our society.

As a result of its flexibility, homeschooling children with learning abilities can be very helpful for both guardians and children because it allows students to learn at their own pace without being left behind. Due to the absence of a fear of judgment, students do not have to shy away from asking questions when they don’t understand a certain topic. Students with special needs or learning challenges who are homeschooled are also less likely to be bullied for not grasping the topics as quickly as other students. This creates an environment for students to speak up to their parent/guardian when a topic is not understood, so another learning technique may be used.

Being cost-effective is another benefit of homeschooling. Parents are able to save money on a number of things, such as school supplies (uniforms, socks and shoes), textbooks, lunch money, and school fees. If needed, because softcopies of books can be used and pages can be printed when necessary. This also leads to students having their own resources and spending less on unnecessary fees.

Despite its benefits, being homeschooled can be a very lonely experience. There is a possibility of the isolation caused by homeschooling leading to issues such as social anxiety and selective mutism. Throughout the lives of affected students, these issues could result in them missing out on and being overlooked for opportunities requiring advanced social skills - options that would then be given to their counterparts who have been much more integrated into society.

In conclusion, homeschooling can be beneficial, as it creates opportunities for students with special needs or learning challenges to learn at their own pace, and for parents to save money. However, it is possible that it could have negative effects on the psycho-social development of homeschooled students.
